Preparing Older Adults for Fall & Winter Safety

Preparing Older Adults for Fall & Winter Safety

As the seasons change, so do the challenges that can impact the safety and well-being of older adults. Cooler temperatures, shorter days, wet leaves, and eventually snow and ice can increase the risk of falls, home hazards, illness, and social isolation. Taking proactive steps now can help older adults remain safe, healthy, and independent throughout the fall and winter months.

At Partners In Care Maryland, Inc., we believe that aging in place begins with a safe home, meaningful connections, and access to trusted community resources. Our programs are designed to help older adults prepare for seasonal challenges while continuing to live confidently in the comfort of home.

Make Your Home Safer Before the Weather Changes

A safe home is one of the most important factors in maintaining independence. Fall is the perfect time to address small repairs before colder weather arrives.

Through Repairs With Care, Partners In Care offers handyman home services for older adults that help make homes safer and more accessible. Our volunteer handymen complete minor home maintenance and repairs that can significantly reduce fall risks and improve everyday safety.

Services may include:

  • Installing grab bars in bathrooms
  • Repairing loose handrails and steps
  • Fixing leaky faucets and minor plumbing issues
  • Replacing light bulbs and improving lighting
  • Addressing trip hazards throughout the home
  • Completing other minor maintenance projects that support safe, independent living

These simple improvements can make a lasting difference, giving older adults greater confidence while reducing the risk of injuries during the fall and winter seasons.

Staying Connected Is Just as Important as Staying Safe

Safety isn’t only about preventing falls—it’s also about preventing isolation.

As temperatures drop, many older adults spend more time indoors, which can lead to loneliness and decreased social interaction. Research consistently shows that staying socially connected contributes to better physical health, emotional well-being, and cognitive function.

Partners In Care’s Member Care program is rooted in the belief that every older adult deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported. By combining practical assistance with meaningful personal connections, Member Care helps make aging in place easier while encouraging older adults to remain engaged with their communities.

Whether connecting members with resources, checking in on their well-being, or helping navigate available services, Member Care reminds older adults that they are never alone.

Learn New Ways to Age Safely Through GATHER

Preparing for fall and winter also means learning how to stay healthy, resilient, and informed.

Partners In Care Maryland, Inc., in collaboration with Chesapeake Life Center, recently launched GATHER: Learn. Connect. Thrive., a year-long healthy aging and social learning initiative designed to strengthen social connection, lifelong learning, emotional well-being, and aging in place for older adults and caregivers.

Built on the belief that healthy aging depends on more than healthcare alone, GATHER brings together education, wellness, resilience, and community through in-person, virtual, and hybrid programming held at trusted locations throughout Anne Arundel County, including senior centers, libraries, faith communities, Chesapeake Life Center, and the Center for Hope & Healing.

Program topics include:

  • Community conversations and peer learning
  • Wellness, mindfulness, movement, and healing experiences
  • Therapeutic arts and expressive programming
  • Caregiver education and support
  • Brain health and resilience
  • Aging in place workshops
  • Safety education for older adults
  • Grief and emotional well-being

One of the featured sessions in September 2026 focuses on Living Safely at Home, providing practical guidance for reducing household hazards, preparing for emergencies, preventing falls, and making homes safer for long-term independent living.

In addition to live sessions, GATHER offers short educational videos, tip sheets, caregiver resources, and other learning tools that help participants continue building healthy habits long after each program ends.

Simple Steps to Prepare for the Season

Older adults and caregivers can begin preparing now by taking a few simple precautions:
